A new public art mural is bringing a burst of color to a 29-story public housing building in the South Bronx.

The work rises along the Morrisania Air Rights building on East 158th Street, between Morris and Park Avenues in Melrose.

For neighbors who pass this block every day, the high-rise mural makes familiar faces and everyday moments impossible to overlook.

Artist Nestor Garcia, known as Angurria, drew on his connections to both the Bronx and the Dominican Republic while creating the work.

Rather than treat the building as a blank canvas, the project puts residents and their stories at the center of the skyline.

A grandmother holding a baby, neighbors of different backgrounds and children playing near a fire hydrant appear across its three sections.

Those scenes give the community mural a sense of continuity, linking family memories with the lives unfolding on surrounding streets today.

Residents helped shape details of the artwork through workshops, influencing clothing and other touches that make the figures feel grounded in neighborhood life.

The Morrisania Air Rights Residents Association, Public Housing Community Fund, and ArtBridge worked together on the project.

Here, the people closest to the wall had a role in deciding what the wall would say.

At 29 stories, the painting is an unusually ambitious undertaking, visible well beyond the residents who first watched it take shape.

Its scale may grab attention, but its real impact lies closer to the sidewalk, where the imagery reflects ordinary Bronx life.

Garcia and his team are completing final details, including a protective coating intended to help preserve the finished piece.

Community activities are planned around the unveiling, with a formal dedication scheduled for October 27.

As Melrose changes, this public art mural offers a vivid reminder of who already calls this stretch of the Bronx home.
