Student Athlete Education in Bronx County, New York |
A basketball high school with a basketball charter school approach |

A basketball charter school approach can make learning feel connected to students’ interests while keeping student-athlete education focused beyond competition. The sport can open conversations about discipline, teamwork, and the many directions a life might take after graduation. Those possibilities matter for teenagers whose goals may change, whether or not they pursue basketball after high school. School co-founder Dan Klores has long championed the connection between books and basketball, and the new space gives that idea a lasting home. At the ceremony, students, borough leaders and guests celebrated what the building could mean for Mott Haven. |
Still, the real test begins after the ribbon cutting, in ordinary school days and the choices students make next. One student described the new building as a source of confidence and highlighted the school’s continued contact with graduates. That longer view matters because support should not disappear when a season ends, or a diploma is handed over. The promise of this basketball high school is not that every student will build a career on the court. It is the chance to turn a powerful local passion into stronger habits, broader choices, and room to imagine more. |
